IF YOU FOUND A LOT OF MONEY, WOULD YOU RETURN IT?

Legalities aside, if you found a ton of money, would you turn it over to the police (or wherever you were) or keep it? What if you saw the person drop it?

I know if I saw the person drop it, I would tell them. If I found it at a store, I'd be afraid their Lost & Found would keep the money.

It's not my money..... therefore it goes to the police department, store lost & found, or person who dropped it.

There are no other options for me.

The police I understand, but to the store's lost and found, do you really believe the employee you gave it to, wouldn't keep it? I have doubts. Thanks Rocket.

I can certainly understand why you would do that, Pat. Thanks for your great response.

I agree with the others. Try to find out who it belonged to.

When I was about 13 I found a $5 bill outside a small grocery store and took it inside to the owner. He said he would try to find out who had dropped it. If not, he would give it to me. Well....I never received the money and when I went home and told my parents I had found it, Dad said.....he probably kept it for himself. A hard lesson for me at that age. I still am very trusting though.

Depends on the circumstances.

I saw woman drop a 20 in a Vancouver Safeway and walk off.
I picked it up and gave it to her.

I once found six $20 on the U of Calgary campus.
I put an ad in the student paper.
I got one call but the guy couldn't convince me it was his,
so I kept it.

If I found a lot of money and suspected it was drug loot, I'm not sure what I would do.

Yes, I do believe that they would return it to the owner if the owner was able to identify the lost item by bag or amount etc.

It's now not my decision. If it was not claimed, I'd expect the money to be donated to some charity.

Years ago we found four $20.00 bills on the floor beside the ATM inside the door of our local credit union. Given the time we found it, the staff should be able to check out who had last used the machine. The teller said that if it wasn't claimed she would call us and the money was ours. Yikes... My husband said that it was not our money and we didn't want it..... Just donate it to a charity.

I agree with your father but I would have done the same thing at that age. Thanks for your comment, Ann.

I knew that deep down you're a good guy. Very nice, Rentier1. You certainly did all you could do to find the owner. Thanks for your wonderful comment.

local News!! Most likely it would be in a purse or wallet so the person would have to describe it -- I've seen stories like this many times on the News
Yes, I've seen stories like that too. The problem is more complicated if it's in a bag. Also, the fact it makes the news, means it isn't common for people to be honest. Sad really if you think about it. Thanks for your response, HannahRuth.

Like with Lulu's answer, giving it to charity is a wonderful idea. Thanks Rocket.
