ALL I CAN SAY IS...

I am thankful to be living in a civilized country. According to BBC News there are new laws in Brunei:

" the new laws, individuals accused of certain acts will be convicted if they confess or if there were witnesses present.

Offences such as r*a*p*e, adultery, so*domy, robbery and insult or defamation of the Prophet Muhammad will carry the maximum penalty of death.
Lesbian sex carries a different penalty of 40 strokes of the cane and/or a maximum of years in jail
The punishment for theft is amputation
Those who "persuade, tell or encourage" Muslim the age of 18 "to accept the teachings of religions other than Islam" are liable to a fine or jail
Individuals who have not reached puberty but are convicted of certain offences may be instead subjected to whipping."

I can't imagine living in a country where such punishments are accepted. They are barbaric. I am grateful to live in Canada where such things would not be condoned.

What are your thoughts?

I'm very happy to be living where I do also...... and especially glad to live in the middle of nowhere in the midst of small towns instead of a city.

Be a prism, spreading God's light and love, not a mirror reflecting the world's hatred.

Sounds peaceful. I always lived in a big city but I can see advantages to a quieter life.

They do punish lesbians but don't kill them. Interesting why gay men are treated worse.

They kill honosexuals there. Lesbians are treated less harsh. Who knows how they know. Next step may be putting in bugs in all houses there to hear everything. I would not put it past them.

I traveled extensively both nationally and internationally and while I recognize home is where the heart is I count my blessings often that I am an American. There is no place like it on earth. With that said, looking back one of my biggest life regrets was not serving in the Peace Corps. There are many places in the world, including in America too where people can make an enormous difference in the lives of others. I still try to do that but it would have truly been fulfilling for me to have served in a Peace Corp capacity.

Glad to see you too, Maudie.

I think some people misunderstood me. I did not mean only Canada is civilized. I just meant that countries ruled by tyrants who can do anything they want regardless of how violent, is a country I do not wish to live in. I realize that those who do live in those countries, have no choice for the most part.

It's too bad you didn't get a chance to serve in the Peace Corps since obviously you wanted to. America, like Canada, is a civilized country. I only said Canada since I am a Canadian and proud to be one.

I can't talk about all Canadians but I have no desire to become an American. I would love to live in Italy and be surrounded by beauty.

Whether or not one believes in the death penalty for violent crimes committed, I feel is different from this issue. Killing someone for being a homosexual or losing body parts for things like adultery is insane.

Some criminals get away with their crimes in all countries. There are times the laws in civilized countries do not make sense. When someone like OJ Simpson was able to walk free for years after killing 2 people (technically on trial for their murders) before going to jail for a different crime, was wrong. The laws aren't perfect but it is still better than living in a country where one could kill for petty crimes or in some cases, nothing criminal to people with morals like being gay.

Just because one comments on what is happening in a country, does not make them hate the country. I am talking about criticism of the USA or other countries that are basically good but have flaws.
