We had a semi truck come back from a delivery down in Missouri.... our trucks have to be washed nice and clean presentable to the public . I was drafted to help out since we were short handed I pointed the nozzle under a front wheel hub and a rattlesnake dropped out on the floor.... I about SHI* ! It was trying to get away as I was blasting it with water screaming ... one of our guys came with a shovel and smashed it

I don't have a fear of snakes, but I hate to be startled by one. My youngest son was crazy about dinosaurs from the time he could talk, and read everythiing he could about them...... that led to a fascination with lizards, of which he lad three, and from there to snakes. At one time, we had an entire room that was filled with cages of snakes. My only rule was no poisonous ones, and he had to take good care of them. Be a prism, spreading God's light and love, not a mirror reflecting the world's hatred.

Nope, I never had a poisonous snake either, good rule to have!

I'm laughing because I can picture you blasting the snake with the water hose, but at the same time I'm glad you didn't get bit. A friend of mine had reached under his parked pickup truck and he said he felt like something punched him in the arm. He was bit by a rattlesnake and had to be rushed to the hospital. He never saw the snake, just felt the bite.

Thank God we don't have snakes here in Ireland, other than the ones in the Zoo. My heart was pounding reading your encounter with that sneaky snake. Good story, Niles, thanks for sharing.

My blood would have run cold seeing a huge snake slither behind a nesting box for cover. Not for me, I probably would have looked for another alternative to chase it out of the chicken coop in the fading light. Glad you managed to jump out of potential harms way after pinning it down with your shovel. When I was younger, we used to watch American westerns and so often the dreaded rattle could be heard as the villain was about to meet his fate, or the hero narrowly escaping a close encounter with death. I actually like snakes - some have beautiful, black expressive eyes. They're fascinating creatures to watch moving about in their natural habitat. I've only ever killed one. At the time I felt I had little choice as it had decided to frequent my then 2 yr old daughter's play area. It was a juvenile brown snake (Australia) , approx. 20'' long and already highly venomous. I apologised to the young snake as I was killing it; I took no pleasure in taking its life. I felt I had to protect my young daughter who had wandered into the kitchen to tell me it was next to her swing.

WHEN I WAS IN BERKELEY, THE UNIVERSITY BOTANICAL GARDEN HAD A SMALL SIGN IN THE GRASS SAYING VISITORS SHOULD STAY ON PATHS. A SHORT DISTANCE FROM THE SIGN WAS ANOTHER ONE STATING "RATTLE SNAKES ARE SOMETIMES FOUND ON PATHS". SO WHERE TO WALK? ALSO I HAD A MARE THAT I RODE IN TILDEN PARK ABOVE TOWN AND IN MID MAY, AFTER THE SPRING RAINS, THE RATTLE SNAKES WOULD SHED THEIR SKINS. THERE WERE HUNDREDS OF SKINS IN THE SUN AND THE SNAKES WERE THERE TOO, OF COURSE. THE MARE ALWAYS KNEW SOMEHOW WHEN THE SNAKES WERE AND I ALSO KNEW BECAUSE SHE WOULD SORT OF SIDESTEP THEM. SHE NEVER GOT BIT AND NEITHER DID I.

I do not mind spiders or snakes, but they should announce themselves politely instead of shocking us into a frenzy.

That's what happened to my friend Brad, he didn't look for a bite mark because he didn't know what actually happened. His arm started swelling and he felt sick. He said it felt like someone punched him really hard.

Now that's a funny story Tx, you should do some blogs about your experiences here in TX. Do one on the duck hunt, I'll be looking forward to reading it. I've only seen one mountain lion since I moved here, but 4 miles away from me, a mountain lion attacked a mare and her colt. Maybe it was the same one, I don't know. What scares me more is running into a wild boar, I know those will attack you.

I read that Australia has more poisonous snakes than anywhere in the world, LOL, and I thought Texas did. I think snakes are pretty cool to look at. I remember going to this county fair decades ago and there was a man who had a 9 foot long, 110 pound Boa Constrictor. the snake was beautiful, so I asked if I could hold it. He placed it up on my shoulders and I could feel how strong that snake actually was. The snake almost weighed as much as I did, lol.
