During the pandemic, some stores only took credit and debit cards for purchases. Others would take cash, but did not give change back to you. So much fear that cash would spread the virus. There are so many germs on that cash anyway, we've been touching it for decades, why all the paranoia now?

Now it is rumored that we will become a cashless society. Do you think that's a good, or bad idea?

Personally, I think it's a horrible idea and I have my reasons as to why I think it's bad, but I would like to know if others think the same way, and why? If you think it's a good idea, I'd like to know the reasoning behind that as well.

I haven't paid cash for donkey's years. Why you ask, it is much more convenient.

I'm against a cashless society, although I don't use it very often. I keep a few hundred on hand for paying small amounts in stores or drive throughs, but mostly I use plastic. It's good to have cash on hand too, in case the plastic gets compromised and there is a time period where the account is frozen and new cards are issued.
I also agree with Sandy, especially when our government wants to know when we spend over a certain amount at a time. Ain't nobody's business!

So what would you do if your card was compromised and you needed to pay a bill, or buy food or gas? It can take a week to ten days to get a new card, unless you can pick one up at your local bank branch, then you have to wait another 24 hours before you can use the new one. If a card is being sent to you, you not only have to wait for the card, but you have to wait another 3 days for the pin to be mailed to you.

That's true, that's what happened to the truckers during the protests in Ottawa, they did freeze the protesters bank accounts. Who's to say the same can't happen to us?

Convenient yes, but spare cash is always nice to have around just in case.

I do the same and I am glad I do. Been compromised and had to get feed for the animals, if I didn't have cash on hand, I would have been up the creek!

I also agree it's nobody's business on how I spend my money. Banks like that virtual money and if ordered to, can freeze your account in a heartbeat!

I have always pretty well exclusively used a credit card for purchases. I also keep about $80. or so in my wallet.

Two reasons:

1. You never can tell when technology will fail. Recently our communication network went down in many areas of Canada. Retail registers could not accept debit cards. The ATM machines also were not functioning so customers could not get cash.

2. Without cash it would be the end of yard, garage, and second hand selling etc. etc. Just think of the number of occasions you might give a homeless person a buck or two or buy lemonade from a kid's stand, or tip wait staff. I'm sure some of you can think of other situations which need cash.

The power grid could fail also and who knows how long that would take to come back.

They've been pushing for a cashless society for decades, well, the central bank has. Never heard of a wrist band used for tracking us. I have read that in China they require all their citizens have a cell phone and they track the people that way. They can do the same to us here in the states, which isn't legal, but it's done anyway.

The only time I use cash is when I grab a taxi to the airport and then I use cash to pay for my fare. I also take extra cash so when I visit family I can leave a tip of cash behind when I leave. I use my debit card all the time when I shop and use my credit card when I dine out. I usually have cash sitting in my wallet for months.

If I need money I just use a debit or credit card and I can tip cabbies and servers in restaurants. Even if I lost both debit and credit I can walk into a bank and get a new debit card and just wait for a new credit card to arrive. As for paying bills, there are two ways to do it, either pay them from the bank account or use Interac e-transfer which is a method of sending money to anyone that has an e-mail address. The e-tranfer is my favourite.

Nileyears replies on 8/3/2022 7:06 am:
So you use both cash and plastic, but only pull out cash when needed.

What if you ran into the same problem Rocket had and you couldn't use your card for anything? Spare cash is always good to have.

I GUESS IT IS JUST BECAUSE I AM OLD THAT I STILL WANT CASH IN MY PURSE. THAT WAY I SEE THE MONEY GO AND HAVE MORE CONTROL OVER MY SPENDING.I HAVE GONE BACK TO PAYING CASH AT LEAST ONE WEEK PER MONTH AND HAVE NOTICED THAT LOTS OF PEOPLE ARE DOING THE SAME.

Another good example, StarCandy!!

btw: to someone else.... How folks choose to pay for things is not a conservative or liberal issue. Credit cards, debit cards and e-transfers are technological developments..... everything has its positives and negatives.

Hi Rocket, I couldn't agree more .. it's not a conservative vs. liberal issue.

But in the USA we have 2000 Republican Only Talk Radio stations and tens of thousands Republican Radio 'shock jocks' who's job description is to divide the Nation by making everything political ............ they speak with one voice because they get the content of their 'shows' each day generally the same source ... the Drudge Report.

The audience gets 24/7 indoctrination/grooming as to who they are ... what they like - and what they don't like ... where they stand ... what the official Republican opinion is .... what's politically correct

I prefer to have cash in my wallet when I leave the house and pay for things under $50 with that money. If the bill is higher, I use the debit card and cash back.
When I have somebody at my home for repair, I write a check.

I hate the idea of a cashless society. To me it feels like taking away part of my private life and freedom. It is nobody's business, when and where I sit down to have a cup of coffee and a snack. I don't do online banking although they try to lure me into that trap. LOL I don't trust the technique, and when all the lights go out - what then?
The more technique we allow, the more surveillance we allow.

I think it is a very bad idea since when computers go down, and they do, our stores are cash only. also many and I do mean many small businesses and restaraunts cannot afford the fees that come with or the systems to accept credit cards. Also, what about paying the babysitter? Yardsales? So many times cash is key.
I know using a card is convenient sometimes, in fact many times, but there are times when it absolutely doesn't work.

Good points Twilight~~

Many don't realize that businesses pay for the privilege of letting you use credit cards. In fact... certain cards that offer the holder more perks charge the businesses more!

When a customer uses the tap feature the cost to the business is even higher which is why many small businesses do not offer that feature.

Right..... babysitters, the kid who cuts your grass, the odd job fellow, and most house cleaners expect cash
