Hi Hank. I really have no idea which is best. I have used a couple of the free ones for years. For quite awhile, I used AVG, but for some reason (and I don't remember why) I switched to Avast. I find it easy to use and I believe it does a good job. Of course, I believe it's paid edition is probably even better.
I know my new computers have come with trial sessions of Norton or McAfee, but I found them complicated for me.
There are some sites that will give you ratings on them from professionals and other users. Perhaps Bob will also give you a useful answer, he seems very knowledgeable about such things.

I use PC Matic - does a great job and a very cheap price.

I agree with Maisie about CCleaner. I have that, plus I have Malwarebytes and Superspyware on my computer and run them occasionally.
I'm sure there are better programs these days, but so far these have worked for me.
