In my previous blog you said that there are no longer bees and butterflies in your area......where is that?........

Just wondered, because I know that people in many communities have joined together to bring them back. These programs publish books and videos to teach people how to attract butterflies and bees. There are certain pesticides that kill them, and when the residents only allow certain cultivated plants and mowed lawns in an area, they just stay away. The plants that are good for butterflies are mostly those that the caterpillar stage uses as food and as a place to form and safely hide them as they change into butterflies.....plants indigenous to the area, often they are plants that are considered "weeds"......Because they are weeds, there has been a concerted effort to kill them off.....many communities are now encouraging bees and butterflies and have successfully brought them back by allowing spaces for the wilderness to flourish and by replanting the species that nurture them.

Digitalis is the Latin name.....the whole plant is a strong heart medicine and the plant is considered a virulent poison.......we are warned to not even crush it in the hand. I recognize the German word Fingerhut as thimble....a very fitting name......The Norwegian word is Revnbjelle, which means Fox bell..........The English and Norwegian are the only names that refer to a fox......I see why the fox reference, since the shape of the flower stalk in full bloom closely resembles a fox's tail when the fox runs through high grass and holds her tail straight up in the air.......with the sun shining through the red fur...........
