42****

In 1968 or thereabouts, I was in a "Survival Theatre" company in Vancouver. I took some Improv classes with an ancient actress....ancient in my youthful eyes anyways.....She had a pure white afro and Kente-cloth djellabas....She traded me a huge antique costume-jewellery brooch for one of my paintings.......In the 90's, I was having this brooch repaired......The centre of the brooch is a porcelain cabochon with a Greek Goddess painted on it, about 2 in. by 1 1/2 inches........When I went to pick it up from the jeweller, he was all excited that there was a large number 42 stamped on the back........Somehow he knew that the owner of such a brooch would know the significance of that number......Honestly, it took me a minute.....He was right that I enjoyed Douglas Adams's work, I had read the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, but I wasn't a fan in the category that the jeweller was...... I must admit, however, that I occasionally use the famous line....."So long and thanks for all the fish" when saying goodbye to certain people, as a poke, and sometimes I'm lucky and get a big grin in return.....Anyways, that's my exhaustingly verbose introduction to this amusing little crustacean***

I sure wish that were true. Anything I want it to be.

Do you suppose the brooch was made with that number stamped on it or the actress had it put there? Do you still have it? I was hoping for a picture.
I hardly ever wear jewelry anymore, but I enjoy looking at it on other people.

Yes the number was definitely stamped into the porcelain before it was fired........you're interested in antiques aren't you?.......I've been told it was probably made in the early 1900s.......probably the number was the ID of the painter, or possibly the brooches were made in numbered editions like prints......I still have it and could take a photo of it and post it here.......

I can't say that I am "interested" in antiques, I just know what I like and have a very little limited knowledge of some things. I do like to look at jewelry, especially the older pieces. The workmanship on things made so long ago is amazing. Those makers took pride in what they made, and it showed.

BTW, on the philosophical side of your blog, I am not familiar with the Hitchhikers Guide, although I have heard the name. But the meaning of life statement is, in my opinion, a very wise statement.
My gramma had a more homespun way of saying it. She would say, "You make your bed, then you lay in it."

You mean that the true meaning of Life is whatever you want it to be?......Surely that doesn't comply with your belief in a supernatural over-lord?

Why not? Isn't everybody entitled to believe however they chose? .... "whatever you want it to be" would cover that.
For myself, the meaning of life is believing in my Lord, who is Jesus the Christ..... and believing that through that belief, I have ever lasting life with Him and a loving God who strengths and loves me day by day.
For me, that would be my "42****"

So believing something makes it true?.Are there multiple universes and each one has it's own reality?.....Surely you don't believe that choosing to believe something makes it real? If you choose to believe the Earth is flat, it is actually flat?If you believe you can't get pregnant from intercourse, you won't get pregnant?.......If you choose to believe eating peanuts will cure your cancer, it's true?.......I don't believe you believe that we can choose our reality......

Nah, I tried one of those and got pregnant anyway.
I do believe we are each free to chose what we want to consider as the meaning of life.
And I do not believe God is real because I believe in Him, He is real and I chose to believe in Him.

Well, I'm glad we straightened that out..........The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy and all Adam's books and his very popular BBC radio show are Satirical /Humour/Sci-Fi......not serious philosophy..........
