SAILBOATS FOR MRS. JOE

I thought you could just imagine you were in a sailboat, letting the wind carry you along.........I picked photos of gentle winds....nothing challenging, no heeling or rocking......where the wind is your friend.

I didn't include photos of ultimate, high tech foiling, where the boat lifts and is flying along above the water. That's at the top of my bucket list, but I fear it's it's too late for me. I wonder if I could develop a routine with my personal trainer (aka my )that would get me ready for the challenge.......It makes me very sad to think I will never get a chance to experience it......I actually think It would be a good way to die.....I have only seen them in photos or videos.

I'm disappointed the photos came out so small. The first one is a classic Block Island Cow Horn......We built one and sailed it for many years.

Thank you. It must take a lot of skill to maneuver a sail boat. I don't know just how sea-worthy I would be these days, but I enjoyed the pictures.

I have never been on a sailboat but I think I would enjoy doing so.

I think there is still room on my bucket list.....

Why do you think it would be less safe than a motor-boat?.....

All you need to do is sit and watch someone else handle the sails......sailors are show-offs.

Maybe because a sailboat looks top heavy and more easily tipped over?

Ahhh......Well, we have been designing boats for many hundreds, even thousands of years and sailboats definitely don't tip over more than motor boats. For instance, there is the keel.......a weighted fin under the boat in racing boats where the sailors tend to challenge the weather conditions. There is also "ballast" This means, a boat will have a deep hull, under the water and that space is filled with heavy stuff. The first photo, the Block Island Cow Horn was built on an island off the coast of New York state. There were hundreds built of the same design and they were trusty fishing vessels in those storm-bound waters. Before they headed out, they would put rocks in the hold. They paid children to bring them rocks off the beach. Then, when on the fishing grounds, they would replace them with fish. We used lead moulded to fit between the keel and the ribs. We also had a diesel engine in there that sat on a lead base. The cargo ships used the same principle. They would always replace one cargo for another and would never head out into the open ocean with an empty hold.

Also, the rig, meaning the sails, masts, boom and the controls....the rudder, ropes, winches etc. are designed, not just willy nilly set up. if the wind gets too strong for your rig, you can just spill some wind out of your sails. Or, you can reef them, meaning to lower a sail a bit and roll it.....you may have seen rows of ties at the base of sails. Nowadays you can do it all with electronics, but I think it's more fun to do it myself.

Anyways, you're probably bored silly by now, so I won't describe how to launch a spinnaker, which is the most fun of all....like flying a kite, but only works in certain conditions, with a steady wind right behind you....photos 8 and 10.

Oh no, not bored at all. I found it interesting, although describing launching a spinnaker might make my head begin to spin.
