MEN WHO SEW

I just read a blog by a woman who thinks only women and "Queens" sew.....I thought it an odd prejudice in a blog that complains that she feels as if she lives on another planet, yet can't even imagine a man at a sewing machine.

The first man i met who sewed was a custom tailor....an Italian immigrant. I was given the task by my father, to bring his favourite tweed jacket there for repairs. In - sewing, I chose to make myself a Vogue-pattern wool suit sculpted using hand-stitching, interlining and steam-sculpting......I went to the same tailor to get some expert advice........

When I was part of a theater troupe in Vancouver in my early 20's, there were several men who worked in wardrobe.......some of them were hoping to start their own couture line......

Then, when I got into sailing, I met several sail-makers and they made sails as well as other accessories and some also made custom valences and seat-cushions........When I was on the board of an arts council, I was in charge of having all the banners sewn. The banners hung on frames from all the street lights downtown and were hand-painted by local artists.......They were sewn by men.

The upholstery shop I have used for years, is run by Vietnamese men.....

I have known men who sew as a hobby, making clothes for themselves and their families..One man I knew made gorgeous dresses for his wife.....

I can sew and do the dishes. I think my weakest link is cooking, everything else I'd be all for it.

Well, you succeeded in making me laugh.......When my husband and I sailed our boat and both of us needed to be on deck, he could easily hold on to the mast and pee overboard without hitting the boat......At first I couldn't do it, but with a little practice and improved technique I could do it no problem.

Several years later, I had just been hired to grow produce for a Salmon fishing
resort and I was inspecting the gardens......It was a remote location about 3 miles from the resort.....I was the only person for miles......I was standing at the edge of a sheer cliff, looking over the ocean, when I had to go pee.......the toilet was very far away........There was a low railing and a sign saying "do not go beyond this point"........I was suddenly struck with the urge to see if I still had it.....if I could pee over the edge of that cliff.....I stepped over the railing, to the very edge of the cliff and pulled my pant down......I shuffled forward until my toes were over......I thrust my pelvis forward and let the stream go....Just as I was finishing, I heard a crunch and a man clearing his throat......I almost fell off that cliff.....pebbles broke off and rattled down through foliage.......I stood up. pulled my pants on and turned......It was the owner of the resort and a couple of clients........The boss said....."good aim" and we all cracked up.....I was mortified, but played it cool.......

My husband wore boots and wool socks all winter and when we were first married, I would darn his socks.....After we had kids and I had so much to do, I taught him how to darn and sew buttons on and he taught me how to split wood and change the spark-plug in the boat engine.....

I find cooking just for myself uninspiring.....I mostly eat salads....

I went to a large quilt show in Regina, Saskatchewan one year. The most gorgeous quilt, a prize winner, was made by a man.

We happened to share a table at lunch with him and his wife.... a very interesting couple.

I got a sewing machine as a retirement project. I spend a lot of time on Pinterest learning. Retirement brought wood working into my world too. I'm making furniture now and always learning. I have a piano coming Thursday.
I'm swamped. I should have retired years ago lol

That's cool.......I just finished a quilt square for a project by a group I have been contributing to for 30+ years.......We have several men in the group.....
