New Age Psychics.....

So CP's blog about the prophet got me thinking about the New Age silliness when many people were believing in all sorts of other-dimensional nonsense.....remember Crop Circles.?...and all the books by people claiming they were Psychic and were in touch with spirits on the "other side"?.......I'm going to post the stories in the comments so words don't disappear.........

Remember 20 years ago or so, when there was all this New Age woo woo going on? I had several friends who had other friends who were really into that stuff.....It was hard to get away from it without being a hermit.....Women I worked with......It drove me crazy....One good friend who has a degree in Psychology fell for Psychic stuff really hard......I couldn't believe it.

There was a woman from England who gave a workshop....I called her the "English Channel"......She charged a lot of money for a "private session" where she would tell you all about yourself...give you insights....She taped the "revelation" part of the session and charged an extra $50 for that......My friend met me for coffee after her session and told me all about it....she was very excited about how this woman knew things about her that she couldn't possibly have known any other way than by channeling.

I asked my friend many questions and she said that the whole session was a couple of hours long, but the channeling part was only 20 minutes. So I asked what they had done in the first 100 minutes, and it turned out that they had "talked"......the medium asking her questions about herself as my friend talked about her life.......In other words, everything the medium said in her "reading" was gleaned from the conversation, but she was clever and experienced so my friend never even noticed.

Another friend insisted I go with her to see a demonstration of this woman who was a professional "channel". She channeled some all-knowing wise character....This demonstration took place in a church....There were props and music and her husband did a long talk praising her amazing channeling abilities. He had also handed out an advertising pamphlet. During his monotonous talk, I read my pamphlet and tucked inside, was a full-page photocopy of a channeling......it was exactly what you would expect......vague words of commonly used wise sayings.....

Then the woman went up there and did this whole theatrical thing where she was trying to make contact with the wise teacher she was channeling.....Her voice changed and she started talking.......and she said exactly, word-for-word what was on the paper in the pamphlet.....I was flabbergasted.......I said something to my friend, asked if she had noticed.....she just shrugged her shoulders......I went up to .the husband after the show was over and pointed out the absurdity....that it was clearly fraudulent......and he said that they have never claimed that she channeled different .words every time......That great truth is worth repeating.....look at how often Humans repeat God's words in the Bible.....and he walked away, and no one else had a problem with it

Another time, a woman really wanted one of my prints and didn't have the money, so she wanted to pay me with a Tarot reading. She advertised herself as a "Psychic" that used the Tarot as a medium.....I said no at first, but gave in. The print she wanted was from an original that was done in Pencil Crayon, as was stated on the print and as were most of the pieces I did in those days.

She came to my house. We sat at a table in my studio area....On the table, were baskets and jars full of pencil crayons.......and pencil sharpeners, and we were surrounded by pencil-crayon drawings .......I cleared a space for her to lay out her cards and she told me to ask the cards a question, out loud. I asked the cards what direction I should go with my Art...........Her Psychic conclusion, after considering all the cards that were laid before us, is that I should get into pencil crayon drawing........

Some days later, I told this story to a fellow artist, who told me that the same woman had paid him for one of his prints with a Tarot/Psychic reading and she had told him he should get into studying moss....We laughed uproariously, because before he retired and got into painting, he was the World Authority on mosses....Had published many papers and books, including the photos and drawings on the subject of moss.........

Question for you...Have you ever read ALL the personality profiles associated with astrology? They are interesting reads and through the years I've met many people who do indeed fit those descriptions. When I read, in depth, all the personality descriptions, there was simply no question...not even a hint of significantly gray areas...I am a Pisces male. Nothing else even remotely fits. I thought about this, with a great deal of skepticism of course, and wondered, is this pure coincidence, or a clever way of dividing up the whole range of emotions and behaviors inherent in all of us and then with subtle inference tell us who we are? So I set out to prove my theory, to myself - yes, something a Pisces male would do - LOL. What I discovered surprised me - I'm just far more aligned with the Pisces descriptions than any other. I tested this again and again, seeking out descriptions from other sources. They were surprisingly consistent, and so was the result. I did decide on something. I embraced fully what I came to understand about my personality, building upon my inherent traits, abilities and interests and choosing instead to defer to others in areas where I was less inclined than struggle unnecessarily with something. That decision gave me happiness...genuine happiness. It really changed my life in profound ways. Did I need astrology to make things happen? No, I probably would have evolved through some other means. The initial discovery eventually led me to read the daily horoscopes, for fun not for guidance. But I discovered something there too. When you read them long enough, lets say for a month to six weeks and you try your best to stay cognizant of the suggestion you find yourself with a lot less chaos down the road. The subtle suggestions are cleverly arranged to take you through an emotional ride allowing you to feel completely, rest regularly, focus so you don't fall behind and keep you from making irrational decisions. It's like a balanced plan for living. LOL I know it sounds silly, and I know we always have to adapt, but the best way to effectively adapt is when you lead a balanced life with an awareness that protects you from becoming reckless, or careless. If there's one thing I believe and live by it's that there are infinite possibilities. It takes a lot before I give up on something. I have to prove to myself that something simply won't work....LOL

So let me ask you..

Are you the fisherman or the fish?
Are you reeling or being real?
Do you bait the hook..Or are you on the hook LOL

I have a question for you as well....Does being a Pisces prevent you from enlarging your font and using paragraphs?......Your comment is virtually unreadable for me.....

THERE WAS NOTHING REALLY NEW 20 YEARS AGO. WHEN I WAS IN BERKELEY IN THE EARLY 1960'S, THERE WERE ALL SORTS OF PSYCHIC MOVEMENTS. SCIENTOLOGY WAS RECENT AND HAD MANY FOLLOWERS AS DID SEVERAL RELIGIOUS GROUPS. NOTHING NEW UNDER THE SUN.

Last Winter I was at a social gathering, chatting in the kitchen, and a middle-aged woman I was talking to started telling me a story about how Astrology had really helped her in being a mother... She rambled on and on about how her various children's Astrological signs interlocked with her own...At one point, probably sensing my lack of attention, she asked "Don't you find that?"........I said that I don't believe in Astrology. She was taken aback and said that she doesn't either, it's just like a game to play......

I took that home......I just didn't get it......why would anyone put all that attention into a game? What do people get from pretending that Astrology has significance in their lives?

I came to the conclusion that in the these times of mass media, Astrology has become a personality language......a reference point and a way for people to communicate about feelings and emotions .......the mother wasn't really talking about Astrology, she was talking about her relationships with her children and Astrology is her reference point and when I told her that I don't believe in Astrology, it seemed to her that I didn't believe in her relationships with her children......

I think that is also true of religion....especially for people who were steeped in it from a young age......their emotional lives are completely entwined with religion.....I just have to read the daily sermon on this site to see that.....every possible Human emotion is wrapped up and defined by Bible quotes.....It's how religion captures people's psyches........

I didn't ask for help with comprehension.......Paragraphs would help though......Do you need some help with paragraphs? I'm sure Google could help.

I'm happy for you that you have found this aid to understanding and defining your life......I have explored Astrology....Many people who are avid Astrology fans are also enthusiastically Evangelical about it. I have a brother-in-law who came to visit me in the hospital immediately after the births of my children, bringing me extensive information about their Astrological aspects, as well as mine......As he lectured me about the significance of Astrology, I lay there, exhausted from birthing and in a trance of intense love for my new child and he didn't acknowledge any of it, so intent was he on his message.

One time a man I barely knew, who considered himself an Astrological Guru, started telling me all about myself based on my birth-date, which he had obtained from a mutual acquaintance. I interrupted him and told him that he wasn't describing me at all......He then told me that if I didn't see myself in his description, I can't know myself at all.....the arrogance is amazing....The man only knew the day of my birth, not the hour, not the place......

Another time, a co-worker who was very involved in Astrology told me she had matched me with a man . She found out people's birth-dates and without our knowledge, matched people up......All I could do was laugh.....but I felt that my privacy had been compromised......the thought of these people probing into other people's lives, believing they have personal knowledge of others by applying a birth-date is ludicrous.....I have also watched several documentaries and read books by skeptics such as James Randi, that show that there is no basis of truth in Astrology...
