IN PRAISE OF PLAY...

Recently I came across a book I bought 10 years ago for a series of painting workshops I taught......some for children, some for adults. About focusing on the process rather than the product. Painting as play ......releasing creativity....embracing the muse, full body gesture etc.

I dug out a stack of these huge, 2 by3 ft. heavy, deckled sheets of 100% cotton water-colour paper....worth $50 each....I'm not sure what I was saving them for......I went for a walk to loosen up and to welcome the old feelings of playfulness to come out of hiding.

I had been focused on the finished product....I was painting for market, planning what the finished product would look like......thinking and over-thinking.

In this time of Covid, I can't show....The galleries aren't open, our art-tours are cancelled.......The restaurants, hotels, offices and lobbies that usually hang art are not .......So I stopped painting.....what's the point, I don't have room for any more paintings in my little house and nowhere safe to store them..........

Well, this situation has now inspired a new delving into the depths of my creative joy and I taped the paper on my easel and got out the charcoal and brushes and paints and the palette and I started........

This is what came out.....what showed up on the paper.....the third one is a work in progress.........

very good stuff..

You can't MAKE people like it, So fun is important.. It amazing what's hidden that we can find..when we stop looking for it.

The paintings remind me of the saying..

It may be okay if a fish loved a bird, but where would they live.?

Like somehow, we have to follow the rules..
We can ask the same question...
if a Muslim loved a Christian, or a black person loved a white person, or a Democrat loved a Republican.. WHERE WOULD THEY LIVE?

Maybe... the idea of finding the "right" answer is... Never the right answer.

The idea of your intent in these painting is secondary.. to how good they are.

For example I saw the first one as a self portrait...was I right?
Well, does it matter?

When is good.. not good enough?

I like all three paintings, but especially the second one. You should post more of them.

It only takes a drop of ink to make a million people think. There are many stories.

The paintings are about my own emotions......the first one is about being overwhelmed by emotion...."out to sea" so to speak.....

The second one is about deeply hidden feelings.....feelings we have disguised and buried for a long time, afraid of the pain and turmoil that will arise if we bring them to the surface and confront them.....and the knowledge that when/if we allow ourselves to feel the dark feelings, they will transform us with light and beauty.

Interesting paintings Sparkle...I am not a painter or a writer. I often wish I could do artistic things. I took a night school course once in cartooning but I wasn't very good at it. I always enjoy looking at other people's art.
