My husband and I spent the winter of 1969 on a wooden sailboat at the Inner Harbour Marina across from the Empress Hotel in Victoria...This wonderful couple were tied up next to us in their hand-built wooden sailboat........They became our very good friends and mentors.......

What a lovely picture and tribute to a couple who meant a lot to you.
Obviously, a hardy couple, who knew how to weather life and could pass some knowledge and wisdom on to others just beginning that journey.

I remember Victoria well - It is steeped in British culture. Washrooms in the Tea Houses. We actually had High Tea at the Empress Hotel. There have been many mentors in my lifetime. Now I get to mentor others. The Circle of Life.
My husband was still at university at UVIC that year and I had a small business buying, repurposing and selling vintage clothing out of a small store/workshop in a refurbished plaza on the waterfront near the Johnson St. Bridge.....We were also very involved in establishing the art gallery "Open Space" which is still in operation today.....Those were exciting times .....

I went to his memorial on one of the Gulf Islands 20 years ago....his wife Sherry died several years before.....she had been a ballerina in her youth and still had that graceful aspect even as she walked barefoot on the beach to launch her dinghy in the surf.......She was very gracious....Alan was interested in everything.....he painted beautiful small oils.....mostly seascapes with sailboats....he captured the wetness of waves and the texture of clouds really well.....I have several of his prints.....I'm friends with 2 of his nieces and great and great-great niece......I also know their son, who has stage 4 lymphatic Cancer and is a trooper about it as he has been about everything in hi life.

Alan's memorial, of course was attended by wooden sailboat builder and enthusiasts from the whole coast......It was held outdoors in a small cove......Many of us had made toy sailboats to carry his ashes out to sea.....A beautiful early Summer day....high tide was at sunset, and we each placed some of Alan's ashes in our boat and sent them into the receding tide.....and the whole fleet of toy boats could be seen sailing into the unset as we watched with tear running down our cheeks.......Soundss pretty cheesy, I know, but it was a perfect sendoff for Alan........

Not cheesy at all..... just a touching tribute in honor of a beautiful person, who obviously touched many lives in unforgettable ways.

I'll never forget the day he let me launch the spinnaker on a long reach across the channel.......It immediately filled with wind and kept her belly for a couple of hours..........glorious.....like flying a kite while you're in the kite....
