The container is a wooden boat carved by my husband as a gift for our son around 1978.....He built many toy boats over the years, some were much larger and had fully functioning sails and rudder that we would chase in a kayak or row-boat.......When our son was about 2 1/2, he started calling our neighbour's little sailing dinghy a Duckboat.......There were a lot of ducks on the ocean where we lived.....Large flocks landing and taking off and quacking in unison are very exciting and intriguing.........and when we crossed paths with them there was quite a hullaballoo.....They are also very beautiful and sweet when you come across them alone or in pairs.

At the time, we lived at the mouth of a large creek. Not far from our cabin, was a waterfall that fell into a pool surrounded by big granite boulders. The pool was about 20 ft. across and in the Fall and after a rainy period, it made quite a roar. Every morning my son would accompany me to the waterfall pool to fetch water.....we didn't have piped water at the time......It was always a magical way to start the day.........One morning, when we got to the waterfall, there was a beautiful Mallard drake sound asleep and floating in the pool, with his luminescent teal blue and green wing patches and head shimmering in the morning light. ......His beak was tucked under a wing and he was slowly floating in a circular path around and around the pool, caused by the falling water......My son was very excited and I picked him up to hush him so he wouldn't wake the drake.....and we stood there, cheek to cheek and watched him for a very long time..........That was the beginning of his Duckboat.......He said it over and over...Duckboat....and pointing out on the water at boats going by......And his dad made him a Duckboat that he carried with him everywhere......The prow and keel and stern were carved like a duck and the sides were made of steamed, very thin, Yellow Cedar planks......On the water, it looked just like a duck....A duck that could carry stuff like a boat.

Sparkle that is a really cool offering of a carved boat. They look like pears in the boat. It is also a real nice story abut the carving.

Heartwarming story, thanks for sharing. As a child, our house was also at the mouth of my hometown river. Since the river wasn't canalized at the time, every time it rained the river overflowed their banks. If it wasn't because our house was built on stilts, the water could have gotten inside.

That is so cool...Living close to Nature there is always an adventure around the corner..........I lived in a town [near the Alaska border that had a lot of houses on the flats at the mouth of the Salmon River that were on stilts.......I took a lot of photos, but they are lost.

It takes considerable talent to crave those boats.
Ye it does......he also built full-size wooden boats......He built them using off-set lines in books......First, in order to visualize the shape of the boat, he made a miniature version.......but only one side.....he would carve that out of wood and mount it on a board.......Then he made a flexible ruler about 6 ft long, out of a perfectly clear board hand planed down to about 1/4 inch thick..........and would loft the boat, using the measurements in the book and his flexible ruler to get the curved lines right......it i quite a process......,

Thanks Maudie......I didn't plan on this photo bringing up such strong memories of my husband........In fact, I'm finding myself getting rather maudlin...

I really enjoyed your offering, and the glimpse of your life that you shared with it.
