The first two are Salmonberry.......my favourite, they remind me of newborn babies when they first emerge all crinkled and red..... The berries look like Rasberries, but bigger and are named "Salmonberries" because they look like Salmon roe.......Some strains are yellow and some orange or red......they are very delicate and are best eaten fresh......

The bottom one is Oregon grape.....The flowers make a refreshing snack when hiking....they taste fresh and slightly sour.....and quench the thirst.......The berries are blue and come in bunches, hence the "grape" reference......They are very tart and have a lot of pectin, so make a wonderful blue-purple jelly........I mix it with hot peppers for a palate explosion......or mix it with other berries........

When I was a kid growing up the wild flowers that were prominent were the wild roses. Wild roses are the provincial flower for Alberta. When the flowers dropped off then there were rose hips. The rose hips had a pithy taste to them. My mother made rose hip jam in the fall when the berries were ripe. I wasn't crazy about that.

Leaves are barely starting to open here. Wild Plum all down the fence row. Daffodils and crocus barely started to bloom.
The Salmon berries ripen at the same time that Robin's eggs hatch.....You know they are hatched because the parents pick up the shells and fly far from the nests and place them on the ground so the predators won't find the nest.....that's why you find those beautiful little blue shells on the ground, still intact.....

The Robins can be seen picking Salmon Berries and flying to the nest and hear the babies cheeping and then stop for a few seconds and then mom's back in the bush getting another berry......working so hard .....back and forth....back and forth.......

Really pretty and so colourful and fresh looking. Some wild flowers provide a beautiful fragrance all season long.

I remember growing up in the country, the ditches and fields used to be alive with pretty wild flowers. My favourite was the lovely little cowslip.

The way you took the photographs make a beautiful picture. Spring flowers are always a welcome sign to me that winter is over.
I remember years ago, we took our Brownie scout troop to a lady's home who had some wooded acreage. They never mowed their yard early because there were wild flowers she called Spring Beauties all over it. She took us on a short hike, around her yard and through the wooded area, pointing out the various wild flowers and inviting all of us to get down and really look closely at them because they are so beautiful, even though they were tiny.

Here our Robins go after the nightcrawlers ... when they fly back to a tree you listen for the noise of the babies wanting their share.
I love hearing a nest full of baby birds....makes me feel like all is well with the world.......

We celebrate "May Day" here on the island on the last weekend of May ..we've been doing it for over 100 years......but not for the last 2......It's always a community affirmation.......there is a theme and everyone dresses up and there's a parade, a stage, driftwood building contests, greased pole climbing with an envelope full of money at the top....the grade 4 class does the maypole dance, there is a May Queen.....a grade 7 girl who wrote and delivered the best speech and her escorts......including the whole kindergarten class.....people get commendations for being good citizens.....lots of music, lunch baskets are auctioned off, there is a sailboat race...more music, BBQ Salmon and corn on the cob and huge cakes and picnics and ............the park where it's held is full of wild roses that are in bloom .....so it smells like beach, Salmon roasting and wild roses........and I'm so excited that we can have our Mayday back again.......
