These are photos of my brother......The top one is with our dog Jeannie.....She was the best dog ever and lived a long life taking care of us.....She once had 22 puppies in 6 months....by a sneaky Husky down the road.....She had 10 and then, before we had found homes for the first lot, she had 12 more.....My dad made sure it never happened again.......But they were gorgeous pups and both parents were registered pure-bred.......Us kids loved those pups...they were also a big draw for other kids......We had a huge, undeveloped basement with a cement floor and our dad set it up for the dogs....it was fun, but a lot of work to take care of them all......

The second photo was taken in Norway.....My older sister had helped him dress up, I don't remember what he was dressed up as, but he was very proud of himself. A couple of years ago, I came across, on you tube, a long colour film from about 1955 of a Constitution Day parade in my home town in Norway.........I glimpsed something that went by very quickly....just a movement......and although my mind didn't register what it was, my heart reacted....like a love dart shot right into my heart......it took me a good hour of searching to find that split second again......It was my brother marching with his school band, wearing the uniform and playing his trumpet.....just a flash of his face as he lowered the trumpet......just there.

I immediately shared it with my sisters and our foster brother in Norway and we all shed some tears and had a laugh.....my brother had died just a few months before.......what a treasure that little clip was......

Great memories of a time long past, sparkle. Both photos are a real treasure. In the second photo that little boy looks very serious..... probably thinking of an important event lying ahead. I regret that all old photos of my family are in Germany in a suitcase, and I have no access at the time being......

That second photo was taken just a few years after the occupation.....We were told very severely not to go into the bomb shelters or the buildings the occupying army had left behind.......I remember us riding our bikes to one of the war buildings and looking underneath and seeing piles of bones and assumed they were Human remains, but when we returned home, shaking, were told the building had been a mess-hall and the bones were from animals.......but war was still very much present......

My brother and his friends explored a bomb-shelter and found children's books, toys and a big bag of hard candy....My friends and I thought we would also explore and a tunnel collapsed on us and I almost died.....the remaining tunnels were immediately filled up.....It took many years and much effort and expense to clean up......people were dazed and despondent.......

That looks like a Lassie dog Sparkle. Such happy times you were having even though it was during the war years. Living in a rural area in my formative years I remember the happy times when my brothers and sisters and I created our own fun. There was no bombing where we lived. I have read so much about those war years and wonder how people survived. Nice blog Sparkle.

Great black and white images, and fascinating story about the occupation. Sorry to hear about your brother.

Really sweet photo, Sparkle. Your brother had such a lovely smile, even the dog seems to have a smile on her face. I can only see one photo though.

Jeannie sure produced a big family of puppies must have been a busy time for all the family. So many puppies to love and spoil.

So sorry for the sad loss of your brother.
