1957 - a homo goes to the police to complain about being beaten up for his sexual preferences. Police give him another beating.

1957 - A Black guy tries to enroll in an all-White university. Federal troops have to be called out to protect him.

1957 - An unmarried woman comes pregnant. She is fired from her job and shunned by her family.

it seems you missed the very point of this post comparing periods of time in our countries 242 year history to date.

It wasn't about good or bad, but rather how complex our country has evolved into in the name of so called progress!

Fantastic comparisons...... things weren't perfect back then, but they sure weren't as crazy as they are today. Folks took responsibility for their lives and didn't expect sympathy for everything they considered an offense.

Be a prism, spreading God's light and love, not a mirror reflecting the world's hatred.

It sure sounded to me as if it was meant to show how much worse things have become.

It was......I have seen this several times before.....they are made up scenarios......excruciatingly simplistic with obvious intent by those whose favourite form of escapism is to share nostalgia .

Except for the part about stepfathers getting away with chronic spousal abuse and serial r*pe of their stepchildren...........Ahhh....the good old days when Men were Men, Women knew their place and children were seen and not heard.......Right Mrs Joe? When Folks took responsibility for their lives.

You're damn right ....... I took responsibility for my life. I never whined, "oh poor me", I squared my shoulders, went on with my life and became a wife and mother and a nurse. I worked hard and felt like my life was a success, in spite of what had happened to me in my childhood. I was victimized as a child, but I never became a victim.
I've shared my experiences with others, not to garner any sympathy, (I don't need or want it) but to show others that people can overcome adversities and not become victims who let things like that define who they are for the rest of their lives.

I'm sad that you took my comment as a criticism of you......It was not meant that way at all........I was talking about how when we were kids and earlier, people like our abusers were not made to take responsibility for their actions......In those days, women could not charge their husbands with battery....Only the cop could charge them and only if he witnessed it. Of course, by the time the cops showed up, he had stopped......

There has also been a lot of work done on how to protect children from abuse.....physical and/or sexual. People working with children are taught how to recognize an abused child and children are listened to and believed. There has been much research into the dynamics and the psychology of paedophiles in the last 40 years.....lots of growth in that area......

I was thinking of the Catholic Priests and other men in authority who we now force to take responsibility for their actions towards the less powerful, like children and women.
