Why not speak out?

I have often wondered why some folk will not speak out when they see an injustice done to another human being.

I was unknowingly made to look at a murder of a man on tv. The victim was unable to move and the policeman had his knee on the victim's neck. The look on the policeman's face is what I was drawn too he looked as though he was enjoying seeing this thing(he did not seem to see the man as a human) being controlled by him and he did not seem to care that a video was being taken of his actions. He seemed to feel that if folk saw the video..so what!!.....he would not lose his pension or job. He did not see the man as human. I was sick at my stomach for 2 days.

I do not know what is going to happen to this man but I think that if we all should try to talk to our friends and relatives about other ethnic groups that we happen to be acquainted with it would help people to not be afraid of what they are not familiar with.

What I mean is this. Since I have been an adult I have socialized with many different ethnic groups and I taught my daughters that also. I am now telling my friends and family that just because this policeman did that horrible thing is no reason to hate all white folk. There were a lot of white folk protesting and I think the person was white who took that video. I know some white folk here on this site who will say something when someone here makes a racist comment about black folk and there are some here who will not say anything. I think if more of us spoke out when we see racial injustice done it would help us all to have a better country for us all.

Don't forget folk that had it not been for that video( taken by someone who saw an injustice)....George Floyd would be just another dead black man.

It does not good to say anything here in the blogs. If it makes you feel any better, I have discussed this murder with other people, online and in person, and I have heard no one say that it was anything other than murder. Everyone was happy to see that man arrested and hope the others that were there with him will also be charged.
But there are two horrific acts here. One is the murder, the other is those who are destroying other people's property and livelihood by rioting and looting.

Lots of people don't speak out because the system is created against them. Don't you remember what happened to the whistleblowers who decided to speak out against government injustice? They lost their career jobs.

I did speak out on this site about George Floyd's murder and many people commented. Several others have also spoken out........I don't understand why you think people are hesitant to speak out.......There is only so much to say.....

CP, why is that an odd statement? Brightsmiles said she is concerned because it seems nobody is speaking out. Well, they are.... and that should make her feel better that people are discussing it. But it does not good to discuss things like this here in the blogs because all the folks seem to do in here is try to attack other people with whom they do not agree.

You can try to judge me all you want. I still think it is a travesty for the rioting and looting and burning, FOR ANY REASON. And to steal things from the stores in your community does nothing to show concern for the murder of that young man. It's nothing more than thugs taking advantage of the situation for their own gain.

The weird statement comes after a store is looted and someone says to the owner---------and because its uncomfortable for you! TOUGH! Welcome to Reality!!!

Now that is one to think about from (many) perspectives.

Hello Mrsjoe...........I thank you for your input. I am speaking here in the blogs because I am sharing an experience that I am concerned with. I am not looking for any type of self gratification I am merely showing concern for a situation that I thought needed to be addressed. This is what we all do on the blogs is it not?
I am against the looting and burning because it is destructive and does not help the cause for Black folk at all. I will say though that for you to say that
the loss to people from looting and burning is equivalent to the murder of a defenseless human being is hard for me to understand. How would you feel if the Knee had been on your son or daughters neck? Perhaps I misunderstood your meaning.

Hello Koffla....Thank you so much for your input. You are correct about what has happened to some whistle blowers.

This blog is about people who will be in a conversation with other folk and it will get around to one person talking ugly about a group of black people and
the others will know that the person is lying but they will not speak up. It does not have to be about Blacks it can be about Jews,Brown people etc.

That's the problem with this form of communication, it's easy to misunderstand other's meanings. If you and I could sit and talk in person, as we have in the past, I think we would agree more than disagree. (Of course, you and Mrjoe might find more to agree upon, wink, wink, smile)
I, in no way equate destruction of property with the taking of a life. That man was murdered, plain and simple, and the cop who did it needs to be punished to the fullest extent of the law, as do those other cops who stood by and watched.
Perhaps the rioting needs to be addressed in a different conversation, because we also seem to agree about it.

Hello Sparkleflit........Thank you for your response.and I am afraid that I did not explain myself very well about what I mean't by....... Why Not Speak Out......

Have you ever been in a group of white folk and someone start talking about black folk and how sorry and dishonest and lazy they are and no one corrects that person? It does not have to be black folk it can be any group that is deemed "not worthy" When no one corrects that person.....that person continues to tell the same lie. If someone who knows better corrects that person then that person will either stop telling the lie or stop telling it to that group. That person might even be influenced by the positive that the other person said about Black Folk.

Mrsjoe if I may........A lot of those folk who do the looting do not live in the neighborhood that they are looting. Some of those folk come from other areas and some of them are white too. I am sure you have heard #45 say that the media slant things the way they want to well it is the only thing that I agree with him on. If you look at your newspaper about the only time you will see a black person there is when they have done something awful. That has been going on for years.

Hi Ditsy.......Thanks for your comment and I agree with you. I don't like the burning and looting either because it takes away from the cause and a lot of those looters do not live in the neighbor hood as the media would have you believe. There are some folk who open stores in rough black areas where I would never go and when folk riot and burn that store the people are left with finding another store that will give them credit and that is hard to do. They do not burn it because they know that they will suffer.

Brightsmile, I can't add anything to what's been said about the crime itself .. but like others it made me sick to see it.

We needed something immediately that looks like justice will be served and we didn't get it. There's a reason murderers are arrested on the spot .. yet Chauvin was allowed to go home and was arrested 4 days later. That's not acceptable to me.

Real leadership was needed immediately from the President … and we got next to nothing from the criminal in the White House … yet Trump has much to say about "guilt and innocence" when it comes to his partners in crime .. and his political opposition.

Election Day 2020 we're gonna take out the trash.

I know what you mean.....I have been speaking out for the First Nations People here on the coast since I was in elementary school.....and have gotten a lot of flack for it over the years.....We have moved a long way from the Colonialism and racism, but we still have a long way to go.

One thing that still catches me unawares after all these years of speaking up is the lengths that people will go to defend their racism.....A decade ago I went to a concert by our local community choir. The director had decided that their theme would be old local songs.......Well, they sang an old logger-song from a century ago and it was extremely racist .I brought it up with other audience members as we were leaving the concert, but got only shrugs. I talked to the director and he denied that it was racist and walked away, The members of the choir told me that the director had chosen the songs, nothing to do with them.

I went home and thought about it.......50 adults that just sang whatever the director chose, not one of them thought about the words written and repeated hundreds of times? What the heck.........

They just blew it off......I sat down and wrote a letter to the editor of our local rag....And Oh man, did I get it.......All the choir members and their friends.....In the grocery store, the coffee-shop, the ferry lineup......from all directions I got it.........I even got yelled at in the LIbrary and who did I think I was calling people racist?.........The next edition of the paper had more letters to the editor than we had seen for years.....all defending the choir and condemning me........

The First Nations people just smiled and nodded......and half a dozen white folks phoned me and assured me that of course that song was horrifically racist .....but they never uttered a word publicly..
