I gaze upon the twilight of the dawn That holds me warmly in a tight embrace Just like you, the thick white mists of the morn Softly caress and lightly kiss my face
I gaze upon the flowers in the trees A mass of colour as they gently sway Daintily to the rhythm of the breeze Enthralling me, the way you do always
I gaze upon the grey clouds in the sky As they threaten to unleash the fierce rain It's not for me to know the reason why Without you, there are only tears and pain
I gaze upon the image of your smile It makes me happy, at least for awhile

The Letters

Note: In the 1900s, China was in turmoil and many young men were forced to leave for far-away lands to work in mines, rubber estates, the docks, etc to earn money to send to their loved ones back home. Many of them never returned.
On a cold wintry evening at sunset On a bench next to a tree at the beach Gazing forlornly at the sea, she sat All alone in her world, beyond our reach
On her lap, a box made of mahogany It's old and battered but she paid no heed Taking out the letters so tenderly In the fading light she began to read ........
They had met each other when they were eighteen Fell in love and vowed that it will never end But due to circumstances, unforeseen He had to sail to a far-away land
Pledging his love, he begged her to wait He'll make her his wife he promised, one day With tears in her eyes, a sad goodbye she bade Waving on the pier as the ship sailed away
One after another the letters came Declaring his undying love as always They made her happy as she felt the same Awaiting his return she counted the days
Summer turned into autumn, the years flew by Winter into spring then it was summer again Forty years have passed since they said goodbye Forty years of waiting, tears and pain
A bundle of old yellowing letters Inside a box in a drawer, she kept At night, alone, when it is quieter One by one the letters were read and reread
Eyes brimming with tears she let out a sigh As a tear run down her cheek so pale Separated lovers would understand why Night after night she read without fail
Then one day, the letters stopped abruptly Day after day, there was nothing in the mail She waited for the postman, frantically Hoping for a letter but to no avail
Early yesterday morning a letter came Putting an end to months of anxious waiting "It must be from him", she happily exclaimed It was from his to say he's dying ........
On a cold wintry evening, at sunset She saw him leaving for "that far-away land" She waved farewell, whispered, "I'll never forget" His aged photo tightly clutched in her hand

Someone has taken away my sense of humour

Having lost so many friends and relatives, I am acutely aware of my own mortality. As such, I have decided to wake up every morning with a smile on my face, thankful that I have another day and determined to make it a happy one. Lately, however, the smile is gone; someone has taken away my sense of humour and, as you are all aware, without it, one cannot be happy. Now, who can that be?
Can it be the missus? Has she taken it away in retaliation because I do not enjoy the shopping trips as much as she does? How can I be happy and cheerful when I have to be on my feet for hours on end with only the shopping bags as my companions?
Or, is it my daughters? They have recently fought over a compact disc and are now engaged in a "cold" war. Unfortunately, I have to remain silent and wait for the war to end because I cannot be perceived to be on either side; that would only aggravate the situation.
Maybe, it is my (he is the eldest). He seems a bit preoccupied of late. It could be because of his impending move to France. My and I are pretty close now compared to when he was younger. I suppose it is my fault but, unlike others, I am not born to be a father; I have to learn to be one. Furthermore, I was only 27 when he was born and, as I am one of those who grow old faster than they grow up, I was practically a then.
Some of you may not know this but a sense of humour is priceless at my age. So will whoever has taken it away return it to me as soon as possible, please?
