"The secret of happiness is freedom, and the secret of freedom is courage" - quote by Pericles.
Pericles was an extremely influential statesman, orator, and general of ancient Athens. He lifted Athens into a golden age through his support of the arts, architecture, philosophy and democracy building.

If you want to hear a bird's singing, don't buy a birdcage. Plant trees and bushes.

Yesterday I listened to some music from the time when I was young. One of the songs was "It Was A Very Good Year" by Frank Sinatra. It made me look at the many years of my life that are now history, seeking the one I would call a very good year. When I was in my late teens all years qualify to be called very good. I found a photo taken in the summer when I was 16 or 17.

The song by Sinatra:

When I was seventeen, it was a very good year
It was a very good year for small town girls
And soft summer nights, We'd hide from the lights on the village green
When I was seventeen

When I was twenty-one, it was a very good year
It was a very good year for city girls, who lived up the stairs
With all that perfumed hair
And it came undone
When I was twenty-one

When I was thirty-five, it was a very good year
It was a very good year for blue-blooded girls
Of independent means
We'd ride in limousines their chauffeurs would drive
When I was thirty-five

And I think of my life
From fine old kegs
From the brim to the dregs
It poured sweet and clear
It was a very good year

The last photo was taken in 1996 walking along the beach of Ocean City, NJ.
It was a very good year!

I love to think back on a three week vacation in Ireland, the "Green Island", in 2009. The below pictures were taken in Connemara, County Galway. I enjoyed the serenity of the countryside, the small villages and the friendly people, Irish music in a pub, visited some of the many historic castles....

This time of year the peonies are in full bloom. Christians are celebrating Pentecost today.
The German word for Pentecost is Pfingsten, and we call the flowers you see on the pictures
"Pfingstrosen". They are beautiful!

Last year, my little great-grandson was in Italy with his parents, and they visited a small church along the way.

A huge tree that was cut down in 1891 reveals its remarkable age.

In the second picture the life circle gives a lively impression of its close interconnection
with historic events during 1300 years of its standing - or more.

A couple of days ago a friend sent me two photos that show creative solutions
to save a tree. Instead of cutting the tree, it accommodates the building (pic 1).
The second one got a supporting hand made of stone (pic 2).
